SRHS Foundation provides TPR/S books for French class!

Students of Madame Leidhoff's  first and second year French are working on reading and speaking TPR/S style with PAUVRE ANNE and PRESQUE MORT. Today they did re-presentations that introduced new language. The presentations were entertaining and creative.

These books were purchased with the Foundation's generous donation! Thanks SRHS Foundation! The World Languages Department loves you!

"The Jacket Routine"

Students in Spanish 5-6 learned commands and had a good laugh in trying to direct Mr. Lawhead (who was being literal and obstinate) into putting on a jacket that was way too small for him.  Students weren't allowed to go to lunch until he was zipped up.  As the picture shows, students were successful and went to lunch on time!

ASL 2 students doing group signed presentations!

Mrs. Redelings' ASL 2 students will be doing pair and group signed presentations this week. Students will be using time, food, and activity vocabulary to tell the class what their peers do on an everyday basis. To make things more fun, some students will be bringing props to illustrate their partners' presentations, bringing additional context to their presentations. Students are excited and so is their teacher!  :-)

Spanish 5-6 students view Los Romeros video

Señor Lawhead shared his passion for the Spanish guitar by showing the video:  Los Romeros:  Royal Family of the Guitar.  It chronicles the fascinating lives of the world-famous quartet (who live in Del Mar, CA).  Students learned about the Spanish Civil War, flamenco & classical music and Señor Lawhead's own experience meeting members of the quartet.

"Bullying" the topic French class discussions

Students of Madame Leidhoff's 2nd and 4th year French did semantic vocabulary mapping around the notion of "bullying". Class discussion in French was around ways to make others feel less isolated, distracting a bully, and steps to take when one witnesses bullying. Students did journaling and role-playing activity in French. Students were very engaged in the topic. Before students left class, they all shared a complement with each other...in French.

Great news! Japanese Students soar in JCAP Quiz Bowl!

On Feb 26th, twenty-eight students from Mr. Blackwelder's Japanese classes competed in the Japanese Culture and Academic Proficiency (JCAP) Quiz Bowl, against eight other high schools in the region and approximately 150 students. The falcons soared yet again, finishing second overall in the "Year 2" category with the team of April Amezquita, Deanna Nguyen, and James Hernandez, and 2nd overall in the "Year 3" category with the team of Gabriel Iglesia, Allen Tran, and Desiree Viola. All students also enjoyed hands-on seminars in Japanese caligraphy and Taiko drumming. Omedetou Gozaimasu!
