Preparing for mock-job interview! May 2 & 3

Señor Lawhead's 5-6 classes continue their preparation for the mock-job interview on May 2 and 3.  Curriculum Vitae's have just been finished, students are taking on the role and personality of a job-applicant and now it's just a matter of being prepared.  Congratulations on your hard work, students!

Folktales for Spanish Students

Dr. Jacobson's Spanish 1-2 students are reading folktales from South America in preparation for identifying character traits as well as comparing and contrasting themes such as loyalty and persistence. Through comprehension activities, students are also preparing to build vocabulary and concepts that will facilitate an analysis of the relevancy of messages presented in the folktales. Spanish grammar lessons included direct object pronouns, stem-changing verbs and an introduction to forms of the past tense.

Mock-job interviews and AP exams approach!

Sr. McVeigh's Spanish classes have been really busy this week! All Spanish 5-6 students at SRHS are getting ready for their Mock Job Interview next Wednesday and Thursday. It will be great to see them dressed to impress when it's their turn to walk into their interview with our wonderful community volunteers. 
The AP Spanish students are also getting ready for their exam on May 8th. After a year of hard work, it's time to reap the benefits of their labor!

De nombreuses activités françaises!

Madame Leidhoff's first-year French begin rehearsing for their performances of Le Petit Chaperon Rouge which will be performed to Mrs. Hillman's preschool children.
Second-year French presented in Carousel their timelines of their childhood. Students are applying their skills in when to use the imperfect tense and the passe compose. The pictures of the students when they we younger are so cute!
Students of Advanced French will present their African Francophone artist on Monday. This week we began reading, La noire de... of Ousmane Sembene.

Missing teachers

Parents and students may have noticed the presence of many substitute teachers this week, especially Wednesday through Friday as many attended hearings being held at Kearny High School.  With layoff notices having affected 19 teachers at Scripps Ranch High School, the World Languages Department has not been immune.  We encourage parents and students to make themselves aware of the issues and to show support for those teachers who have received "pink-slips" for the 2012-2013 academic year. 

Mrs. Trott to teach English in China this summer!

Mrs. Trott, Spanish 3-4 teacher, was chosen from among hundreds of educators to teach English in Nanjing, Jiangsu China this summer!  In exchange for 6 weeks of teaching, her round-trip flight, housing and food are all paid for including two tours.  Coincidentally, her daughter Lauren, SRHS graduate, has just returned from a week-long visit to China through a program with California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo.

ASL 2 students sign about "Dream Trips"

ASL 2 students in Mrs. Redelings' class started to sign about their "dream trips" this week. Destinations ranged from New York to Paris, Africa to Australia. Students were also tested on their comprehension of questions related to their trip, such as what activities they would do there and how much their trips would cost.

Story on a roll

Spanish 3-4 students in Profe Bañuelos' class this week individually did a "Cuento en un rollo." They used receipt rolls to create describe how a character was when they were younger using the imperfect and preterite tenses. The stories were done on a slide-by-slide format with text accompanied with drawings.

Spanish 1-2 work with vocabulary

Students in Dr. Jacobson's Spanish 1-2 classes analyzed vocabualry with partners by categorizing words through related themes. Students continued their practice of conjugating stem-changing verbs, using direct object pronouns and critical thinking skills through questions related to the Columbian folktale 'Sueños de la tierra' students read and watched on a video.

Spanish 7-8 reads "La Camisa de Margarita"!

Señor McVeigh's Spanish 7-8 students have just finished reading "La camisa de Margarita." It tells the story of a young woman that wants to marry the love of her life but has her dreams crushed when the egotistical uncle of her beau steps and and ruins the plan. She has to use great ingenuity and her "arsenal femenino" to finally achieve her goals. The story is great fun and gave students to talk about relationships and marriage across time and cultures. 

La Vida Viajera de Profe Bañuelos

During spring break Profe Bañuelos traveled to the countries of Spain (Barcelona, Girona, Tossa De Mar, and Valencia), Andorra (located between Spain and France), and France (Toulouse) via rental car. Most of his time was spent in Barcelona where he attended two matches of his favorite soccer club, FC Barcelona. The featured photo shows the awe-inspiring Sagrada Familia cathedral in the background. While there he enjoyed speaking Spanish (a.k.a Castellano) as well as experiencing the local language of the region, Catalán.

¡Bienvenida, Sra. Morrill!

We welcome back Señora Nina Morrill, long-time teacher (retired) in the SRHS World Languages Dept.  She is temporarily teaching Sra. Ranzolín's classes until she returns from a medical absence.  Students are fortunate to have such a highly qualified person to keep them current and prepare them for the mock-job interview!

Spanish 5-6 students prepare for mock-job interviews

Señor Lawhead's Spanish 5-6 classes are dililgently preparing for the May 2-3 mock-job interviews.  Having a pool of questions to prepare with, students break into pairs, greet each other formally and practice their answers.

French 5-6 interviewing classmates about careers

Madame Frederickson's French 5-6 students are working on extending and explaining answers via a chapter assessment that asks them to interview a classmate about career options. They maximize points by being able to give a variety of details in answer to fairly basic questions.

Grammar Carousel in Spanish 1-2


The 'Grammar Carousel' activity in Dr. Jacobson's Spanish classes provided students an opportunity to communicate with one another through the target language by sharing questions and answers reflecting students' knowledge of Direct Object Pronouns and Stem-changing verbs.  Students listened to classic songs such as Cielito Lindo, Guadalajara, De Colores and Guantanamera pausing when the music stopped and presenting a question to a classmate who then responded.  Students who answered correctly received a 'sello cultural' from their partner.  The combined aspects of music and interaction as part of the lesson provided an enjoyable format through which to practice current grammatical concepts.
