Simón Dice: ¡toca la nariz!

Señor Lawhead's Spanish 5-6 classes finish up their unit by learning informal (tú) commands and parts of the body.  Malissa follows what "Simón dice" (Simon says) and touches her nose.

Next week, classes will begin preparing for this semester's mock-job interview project.

IKAGA DESU KA?

The students in Mr. Blackwelder's Japanese 3-4 class are being ushered into a world of hyper-consumerism and department store shopping, Japanese-style. From the polite banter used between shop clerks and customers, to the design of a mini-department store which will spring to life in Rm 250 next Wednesday, students are learning about the many aspects of shopping culture in Japan. Listen carefully on Wednesday for the familiar department store call: "IKAGA DESU KA??"

Spanish 7-8 students studying "La Guerra Sucia"

Sr. McVeigh's Spanish 7-8 students are finishing a mini-unit on Argentine history and culture. They're taking on the role of an Argentinian citizen in 1983 giving their opinions about "La Guerra Sucia." AP Spanish students have been working frenetically to practice the writing portion of the AP exam. The countdown to May 8th has begun!

Courtroom Skits in French 4!

Madame Leidhoff's students of French 4 practiced different forms of negative and practiced used them in creating a skit of a court room trial. Amazing interrogations and dramatic acting....

Caperucita Roja, Poetry Contest and Jeopardy!

Dr. Jacobson's Spanish 1-2 students responded to questions in the present tense and present progresive as they watched a short version of Caperucita Roja (Little Red Riding Hood). Students also engaged in oral reading and guided analysis of poems as each class prepares for a poetry contest in March. We ended the week with a Jeopardy game to review the vocabulary and grammar students are studying in Unit 3.

"Girl's Day" in Japan

Mr. Blackwelder's Japanese 1-2 students are gearing up for the Doll Festival (hina matsuri, also known as "Girl's Day"), which takes place on March 3rd in Japan. Students will create a set of charaters/dolls, one male and one female, in honor of the occasion. The characteristics of each character- clothing, body parts, and personality- will also be shared in Japanese without the aid of a script. Recently, students were introduced to colors, parts of the body, and ways to manipulate adjectives in Japanese. Next week, we'll tackle clothing.

Spanish 5-6 demonstrates TPR/S for visiting teacher

Señor Lawhead's period 6 Sp 5-6 class demonstrated TPR/S methods for Ms. Odette Lacarra of Pershing Middle School.  Students were put through their paces learning a mini-cuento and Ms. Lacarra was able to see how students used this mini-story as a support for natural, interactive and unrehearsed speech.  She left with a very enthusiastic impression of both TPR/S and Scripps Ranch H. S. students.

Big Projects Ahead for Spanish 5-6 and above!

Señor McVeigh's 5-6 students are starting to prepare for the Mock Job Interview project coming up this Spring. They are researching potential careers and will complete their first essay next week. Spanish 7-8 students are working on grammar review and a cultural lesson involving Human Rights, Evita Perón, and The Dirty War in Argentina. Next week, they will see excerpts from the movie "La Historia Oficial." AP Spanish students have begun the second semester with AP Exam practice drills. The test is rapidly approaching and practice makes perfect!

French students prepare benchmark about their classes

Madame Leidhoff's students of first year French prepared a benchmark conversation about their classes. They will discuss their schedules, what they think of their classes, what activities they do after school, where they do these activities and with whom.

Tito Puente: El Rey de los Timbales

As a part of their culture notes presentation about Puerto Rico, Profe Bañuelos' Spanish 3-4 class listened to mambo music and watched a timbales solo by "the King of the Timbales" WWII veteran and Puerto Rican icon Tito Puente (1923-2000).

Questions & Answers Using Concept Map in Sp 1-2

Students in Dr. Jacobson's 1-2 class developed 'Analysis Posters' based on their reading, with a concept map and a question/answer section reflecting the levels of 'Bloom's Taxonomy' of critical thinking, including Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis, Application, Evaluation and Creativity. Posing their questions to the class provided an excellent format for interaction among classmates.

ASL students learn about TTY

This week, Mrs. Redelings' ASL-2 students learned about the creation of the TTY (teletypewriter), created decades ago by deaf physicist Robert Weibrecht.  The TTY allowed d/deaf people to use text to communicate with each other via the telphone lines.

Learning commands through Total Physical Response

Señor Lawhead's Spanish 5-6 classes got a little bit of exercise and fresh air today.  After learning the command forms for Ud., Uds., and tú this week, they headed out to the playing fields and took turns playing "drill sergeant" with the entire class and then paired up and ordered each other around.

Mi Rutina Diaria in Spanish 3-4

Señora Trott's Spanish 3-4 students are creating posters illustrating their daily routine: Mi Rutina Diaria. This is in preparation for their presentations next week . Students will describe their typical school day without using any written notes, just the visual they created (their poster)! It is always a very entertaining and fun project.

Celebrando Música Latina

Aligning with the current lesson, Profe Bañuelos' Spanish 3-4 class broke down the lyrics of two songs by Venezuelen recording artist Carlos Baute: "Colgando En Tus Manos" (Hanging In Your Hands) and "Me Quiero Casar Contigo" (I Want To Marry You). Also, Colombian international star/recording artist Shakira's birthday was recognized and honored on February 2.

French students study the Caves of Lascaux

Madame Leidhoff's students of second-year French learned of the miraculous caves of Lascaux near the village of Montignac and their astounding discovery by three boys and their dog, Robot, in 1940. These prehistoric representations are visited by tourist throughout the world. Students learned vocabulary via projections of the cavernous art as well as practice the past tenses an story telling.

A Day in the Life -- in Japanese!

 Mr. Blackwelder's Japanese 1-2 students recently described one day in their lives, from waking up in the morning and going to school to returning home, meeting up with friends, and finally going to sleep. Students could choose to do a video presentation, a PowerPoint display, or a dramatic interpretation, all in the target language of Japanese. The "Day in the Life" unit is the first time students encountered more complex sentence structures, and they excelled far beyond expectations. Enjoy the video!

New ASL teacher joins World Languages!

The World Languages Department welcomes Miss Janelle Gans to Scripps Ranch High School.  Miss Gans teaches ASL 3-4 & 5-6 and is a graduate not only of CSU Chico but of Scripps Ranch High School as well!  With "voices off", Miss Gans has students already hard at work in the new semester.  Welcome Miss Gans!

TPRS Invades Profe Bañuelos' Class


As a preview and as a preparation for Señor Lawhead's Spanish 5-6 class next school year, Profe Bañuelos introduced a modified version of the TPRS style of learning Spanish vocabulary to his Spanish 3-4 students. The video shows students using hand/body gestures for their new vocabulary words in Unit 2.2.

Fun in ASL 2!

Mrs. Redeling's ASL 2 students started the new semester hard work and fun! Students worked in groups to determine which signs were verb pairs, verb-noun pairs, and verb pairs with nouns. Later in the week, students played a new game called Sign Volleyball Spike in which students have to identify signs from the opposing team in less than three seconds!

Argentina,Debate and Family Tree in Spanish!

Students in Ms. Ranzolin's Spanish 3-4 class have been busy working on and sharing their presentations on Argentina in which they studied different aspects of the country. Students in Spanish 5-6 are busy working on a skit about a debate for mayor of their city. They will performing the skit to the class next week, and we are excited to see what they came up with! Students in 1-2 worked on their family tree this week, in which they got to practice using their vocabulary about families and relationships.

Spanish 5-6 Takes Command!

Spanish 5-6 students are learning commands.  In this video, Michaela orders Sr. Lawhead out of the classroom in Spanish.  Sr. Lawhead did not expect that she would get so creative about it and have him jump backwards and sing on his way out!
